Making OF is a documentary web series focused on the research activities of individual departments. The first season centers on the Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology, producing five episodes of 10 minutes each. Each episode highlights different research lines offered by the department.

Concept & Approach:
Each episode has a distinct narrative approach. The first two episodes are more introductory, emphasizing the human side of researchers and the “tools of the trade” common to all professionals in the field. The remaining three episodes delve into more specific projects and research areas.

The series highlights research as both a professional path and a life choice. In the context of declining numbers of PhD graduates in Italy (-20% from 2017 to 2021) and rising NEET rates, it not only informs viewers about ongoing projects and research lines but also explores the meaning of “doing research”, showing the challenges, ambitions, and motivations of researchers in their daily work.
The series is designed to be accessible and engaging even for non-specialists, sitting at the intersection of career orientation, scientific communication, and departmental promotion. The goal is to make research appealing, showcasing the department’s work while attracting potential students and collaborators.
Production & Role:
I am the creator, director, cinematographer, and editor of the series, overseeing the entire visual storytelling process. Making OF – The Frontline of Research was produced by LABS (Laboratorio Audiovisivo per lo Spettacolo) at Sapienza University.
The videos give space for young researchers to act as first-time science communicators, sharing their experiences, enthusiasm, passion, and resilience. The series targets a broad audience—including students, experts, entrepreneurs, and associations—helping them discover research areas, learn scientific methodology, and better understand academic culture.
