PROJECT OVERVIEW
In Ascolto is a feature documentary celebrating the 75th anniversary of one of Italy’s most prestigious concert institutions (IUC). The film weaves together the 2019-2020 concert season with the dramatic history of the institution, from its foundation among the ruins of post-WWII Rome in 1945 to its resilience during the 2020 pandemic.
The narrative is anchored by a tribute to the legendary Ennio Morricone and features world-renowned musicians and critics, exploring the avant-garde spirit that brought jazz and contemporary stars (like Max Richter) to classical halls for the first time in Italy.
CINEMATOGRAPHY & ARCHIVAL RESEARCH
As the director and filmmaker, I managed a complex visual puzzle:
Historical Integration: I curated and integrated rare archival footage from Istituto Luce and RAI, synchronizing mid-century historical moments (such as the 1959 Dave Brubeck Quartet concert) with modern 4K cinematography.
Institutional Aesthetics: Filmed within the iconic Aula Magna of Sapienza University, capturing the grandeur of Sironi’s frescoes and the intimacy of live performances by artists like Paolo Fresu and Uto Ughi.
EDITING & NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
The edit was designed to bridge seven decades of cultural evolution:
The "Legacy" Spine: I used the testimony of the institution's oldest subscriber (since 1954) as an emotional anchor, connecting the founders’ post-war vision to the "public of tomorrow."
Archival Dialogue: I created a visual dialogue between private letters, vintage posters, and contemporary backstage footage, treating the archive not as a static record but as a living part of the current season.
Pacing & Rhythm: The editing follows the breath of the music, transitioning from the high tension of the 2020 lockdown to the vibrant energy of the "restart" summer concerts.
